The number of search engines continues to explode. Search
Engine Watch claims that there are over 1500 search engines.
In addition to the many big players in this category there
are many new search engines that can be very useful as
part of your overall search services. Consider using them
when you are looking for information or when you are trying
to optimize your search standings.
Some of my favorite search engines include the following:
Alltheweb
Altavista
Ask Jeeves - probably my favorite, but it you still need to use other
sites too.
Google.com
Infoseek.go.com
Northernlight.com
- they give you access to many articles that can be purchased
directly from them.
There are many specialized search engines that cover a
vertical industry or topic area like the following sites:
Infomedical
Joefarmer
Dogs
There are also some new visual and streaming audio/video
search engines that are quite interesting. These include
the following:
Ditto
- this is a visual search engine. You can use a text selection
to search for pictures related to that term. I searched
for Monona Terrace and came up with 6 photos.
Streamsearch
- they claim to be the ultimate source for audio and video.
I did a search for hurricane and came up with 94 matches
that included a mix of streaming media types.
Other general search engines also offer this type of search utility.
